Students can begin using Reflex to build math fact fluency in grade 2 and beyond. Before starting Reflex, students need to have a conceptual understanding of both of the operations in the assignment.
Grade 2
Students should be assessed for conceptual understanding in addition and subtraction. By the second half of 2nd grade, almost all students should be ready to build automaticity in addition and subtraction.
Grade 3
Students should be assessed for conceptual understanding in multiplication and division. Those who aren’t yet ready for Reflex in multiplication and division can continue to build automaticity in addition and subtraction until they reach 100%. By the second half of 3rd grade, almost all students should be ready to build automaticity in multiplication and division.
Grade 3 and beyond
Research has shown that automaticity in multiplication and division will improve standardized test scores for students in grades 3 and up, so it is important for 3rd graders to have at least half a year of Reflex in those operations before testing. Once students in 3rd grade and above have achieved fluency in multiplication and division, they can be moved back to addition and subtraction to complete that assignment if they haven’t already.
